ORIGINS

Before the arrival of Columbus, the island of Hispaniola was inhabited by Taino Indians, a peaceful population.
The Spanish colonization began in 1493, with the arrival of 1,300 men from Spain.
The harsh treatment of the natives, together with diseases exported from Europe, the native population was reduced to about one-twentieth of its total.

For this reason, the Spanish began importing African slaves to the island.
