VALENTINE'S DAY

It is thought that "Valentine's day" is a modern invention, commercial, but that's not the case.

Since the 4th century A.C. Roman pagans paid tribute with a unique annual ritual, the 

god Lupercus. 

The names of the women and men who worshipped this god were placed in an urn and properly mixed.

Then a child randomly chose some couples who, for a whole year, lived in intimacy so that the fertility rite was concluded. The following year would then be started again with other couples.

The Christian bishops decided to put an end to this custom.

The emperor Claudius II believed that men without families were better soldiers, and forbade marriage to the young.

But the priest Valentine, did not agree and continued to marry young lovers in secrecy.

Valentine was killed and then martyred on February 14, replacing the rite to Lupercus god, and thus becoming the patron saint of lovers.

But we are in the Dominican Republic and here Valentine's Day is not only  Valentine's Day, but also the celebration of friendship ...

On February 14th we will exchange gifts, we'll go out to dinner and then to the disco. The important thing is to wear something red!

I really like this picture!

The artist, a native of Haiti, he wanted to represent his country with this woman, a po'androgina, where we can see the chains on his head which led to many years of bad government, and at the bottom, the roots are still bleeding.

You will notice that it lacks the final "i" of the word "Haiti", which tells you that it is not over, they still have the hope of a better life.

For the people of Haiti, painting is the breath of life, almost everyone knows paint colors and express the feelings of justice, love and solidarity, leading to the heart.

In Las Galeras, almost every house has a patio (threshing floor), except those on the main road.
It 'an open area, collected from one or more houses, where they live farm animals, children chase each other, women lie, clean rice, help each other and men spend their time playing dominoes.

In this painting, the artist was a typical figure of a woman in Haiti.

Even now, even here in Las Galeras, the Haitian use to carry large containers on their heads, to transport their goods for sale, with an ease and elegance amazing.

This can be baskets, aluminum bowls, backpacks, large trays or buckets and generally contain fruit, sweets, clothes, beauty products, or water.

The same picture exists in another variant, where the predominant color is red and the contents of the basket is different. (n. 161)

This type of framework is called "deformacion" (deformation), because the painter paints the scenes, or persons normally and then "deformed", highlighting a particular.
In this representation of typical Dominican market than gleaming colors, what is most striking is the roundness, vases round, round fruits and the painter has circled two women, arrotondandole as if seen through a lens.

The harmony of this beautiful market caused a stir!
I think this can be defined as "naive style", but the harmony between women's bodies and the liveliness of their surroundings, I do not know what to call it!
The markets in the countries of the Samana Peninsula, which is surrounded by countryside, are true explosion of colors, from fruit to vegetables, fish, clothes for women.

The painter made two versions of the same picture using different colors: "White Way" and "Trio in red."
