CARIFESTA XII

The Caribbean Festival of the Arts, commonly known as CARIFESTA, is a multicultural event, organized by the Caribbean countries, changing place every year.

                 This 12th edition takes place in Haiti from Friday 21 to Sunday, August 30.
                                            The 11th edition, in 2014 was held in Suriname

The Caribbean area, is an area culturally "different" and the meeting of this diversity gives Carifesta, a heterogeneous mixture that captivate the minds incredulous.

What unites all the Caribbean area are its culture and its art, through his songs, his drums, his stories, in all its forms

Carifesta brings together 22 delegations, in representation of different countries, which are received in the capital Port-au-Prince and in the citys of Cap-Haitien, Les Cayes, Gonaives and Jacmel.

During this event, all lovers of culture and art of the Caribbean, will be satisfied!
In the Festival, will be presented film screenings, panel discussions with writers, musical performances, art exhibitions, crafts, cooking and more.

SEMANA SANTA (Easter)

"PROCESSION" A LAS GALERAS

The constitution of the Dominican Republic, provides for freedom of worship, but the majority follows the Christian Catholic religion. The remaining minority is made up of community witnessed Jeova, Evangelical, Baptist, Anglican, Mormon.

The video that we offer, I picked two nights ago here in Las Galeras, during a procession evangelical.

As I stated many times, the music and "the party", are part of the Dominicans and every reason is good! ...

To the citizens of the Dominican Republic you can remove everything but the sun and the music!
From early afternoon, on weekends, or for a birthday, a wedding, or the feast of the patron saint, every opportunity we can to play and dance.
Around Las Galeras, there are still many villages without electricity. Nevertheless the desire and the ability to make merry. The celebrations may also begin from 2 pm. In the early hours of the evening, when it gets dark, light oil lamps and playing the instruments that are represented in this framework as well as other more improvised, such as pots, boxes or cups. All present, from the youngest to the oldest, are unleashed in unbridled Merengue or romantic bachatas (typical dances Dominicans), washed down with rum, Mamajuana (liqueur) and beer.

On Sunday in the country is the "feast day"!
  You wear the best clothes, we bring you the curlers, you go to Mass, they cook special dishes.
Then he takes a walk, meet friends and relatives, some improvised 'music, laughing and joking and dancing a bit'!

This beautiful picture in black and white, is not the typical Dominican paintings, but leads us to New Orleans, a great American port, where the largest number of slaves came from Africa.
Nevertheless, it must be remembered that here lived one of the most active and prosperous free black communities.
The city of New Orleans, was first the French, then the Spanish, the French again in 1800 and finally sold to the United States.
It has hosted for the first, the blacks from Senegal, which have given rise to the development of the great Jazz music.

The Cockfight is still practiced in Las Galeras.
It is known as the sport of "caballeros" (gentlemen), because you bet with another person, but only verbally, small or large sums of money. A challenge without having to sign any documents, working only on the word of honor.
After the fight, the loser, "very caballero", pay the winner!

For many, cockfighting should be abolished, because they impose a cruel and violent death of innocent animals and are morally harmful to the many children they serve.
The farmers, in response, usually claim that their business is an art, and that the animals are treated like royalty until they drop in combat.
In many states, these fights are illegal. But in most of Central America, as in Santo Domingo, is a tradition too ingrained to disappear.

In Las Galeras is a "Gallera", the arena of the Gauls, where the fights are held every Thursday, from early afternoon onwards. Next to the Gallera, there is a disco that goes with his music bets, and where there is intensive family members of gamblers, dancing and drinking rum.

The music and dance are part of the culture of the Dominican Republic.
In this context, what catches the eye is the movement, elegance and sensuality of the three singers.
The painter made two versions of the same picture "Trio in Red" and "White Way".
This is the same picture, but with different colors.

Even in Las Galeras, organize evenings with live music, small groups of the Samana Peninsula and also with famous groups nationwide, where people of all backgrounds come together to have fun and dance the night away!

In Las Galeras, when someone starts playing a guitar, soon adding a guira (a kind of grating that is played with a pole) .. and everything becomes a drum.

It 's already merengue and here we begin to dance, you party!
